Part 1 – “The Trilemma”
When the forest is continuously used in a more intensive manner, a “trilemma“. It will be a challenge to balance seemingly conflicting goals, such as increasing carbon sequestration and promoting the use of wood-based products to replace fossil-based raw materials, while preserving forest biodiversity and its ability to provide environmental and ecosystem services.
This challenge becomes particularly complex in a forest landscape consisting of a mosaic of stands with varying ages, tree species compositions, and productivity goals, especially when this landscape is located in a region affected by significant climate change.
Here, it becomes clear that increased digitization can provide the tools needed to solve the equation for this trilemma. By carefully measuring and monitoring the natural variation in the raw material, we can tap into its untapped potential. Effective thinning can create the conditions to transform our backlog of thinning work, while proactive monitoring and risk management in forest stands provide us with a solid foundation for action, which in turn enables the sustainable growth of our forest stands.
To meet this challenge, one of Addnode’s companies—Icebound—focuses on selected areas of digitalization with great potential. By using remote sensing and artificial intelligence (AI), large amounts of data can be efficiently processed and analyzed. This enables environmental data to serve as a robust basis for decision-making in risk management, particularly when it comes to identifying and managing stands that are not growing as expected. This creates opportunities to quickly and precisely tailor measures to ensure productive and sustainable development that respects nature.

Icebound is already laying the groundwork for the forest management technology of the future. By systematically collecting geographic data over time, we are able to analyze the information to understand trends and patterns. This ongoing data collection and analysis enables us to make well-informed decisions and take the necessary steps to optimize forest management and ensure sustainable development.
Obtaining the right data on habitats and environmental considerations is crucial for implementing the right forest management measures. Establishing an effective process can be a complex task, especially given the vast amount of environmental data available. Without a high degree of digitization, this can be a very time-consuming process.
