A classic problem
All logs are sorted with a very high degree of precision using X-rays, 3D scanners, and measuring frames. The logs are sorted into different grades based on quality, diameter, and other characteristics. At this stage, an operator cannot distinguish between two adjacent log grades.
How do you ensure that drivers consistently load the correct stack from the sorting area and retrieve the correct stack or bin to deliver to the saw table? Deviations result in the wrong grade of lumber on the saw table, as well as in stacks that are incorrectly loaded from the bins. Incorrect loading also results in unnecessary empty runs. All of this leads to significant costs and a stressful work environment.
The Solution – GPS Timber
This classic model is more or less a must-have if you don’t have a support system like GPS Timber, which allows you to always let the drivers know what’s in each compartment and each stack. By using a digital mapping system, GPS positioning, and a connection to the sorting system, you always know the real-time status of the compartments and stacks. With GPS Timber, in addition to gaining control over the stockyard and its logistics, you can, among other things, optimize and create a more dynamic logging plan, which leads to greater efficiency.
Currently, there are connections available for, among others, RemaSawco, Limab, and Microtec sorting systems, but the interface is open, and other control system vendors can implement the same functionality.
